The motto was “catch them young”. A very enthusiastic team of the editorial board worked round the clock from home or from table tops whenever available with a small functional office was able to finally come up with the first issue of “Little Hands” on July 15th 2013 with Dr Ravindran Nair as chief editor. Since then we have successfully published more than 50 editions carrying features, stories, poems, book reviews, crossword puzzles, and child-related activities sent in by child contributors to educate students across the different sections of society.

We encourage and publish original creative writing and drawing and paintings by children. It should be a joint effort and we hope for many Little Hands to take up their reading and writing and become part of this family.

VISION

Little Hands is the result of a dream of a group of educationalists who saw the need to address the huge gap that exists between the financially privileged and the financially challenged children of India. While it may be true that schools offer a similarity in teaching materials and methodology there still remained this huge vacuum in the ability to communicate. Most of the youth of India lack the opportunity to communicate with the outside world, being buried in its own little sphere of regional and rural life. They know little or nothing of English Language which is the language of the industrial and commercial world of today. We have collected data which revealed that both the public and private sector undertakings stress the need for English language communication skills in all interviews and hence employability of our youth is a growing problem.
With this kind of a study before us we began creating an audio-visual dictionary to introduce vocabulary and pronunciation in English. Next we tried out recorded passages of English recitation. These efforts were contained in a limited area and we could not expand due to financial constraints.
It was then that a larger outreach programme was thought about and Little Hands was born. A small group of professors and teachers who came together were united in their opinion that libraries in our country which provided interesting reading material for children, in the English language, did not cater to the financially challenged section of society. The art of teaching requires that one attracts the leaner and learning becomes an unconscious activity.
English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language in a large number of countries. It is estimated that the number of people in the world that use in English to communicate on a regular basis is 2 billion!

MISSION

Most of the young students these days spend more time watching television and playing in their mobile phones rather than reading. In order to cultivate reading habits among children from very young age, Little Hands, a Kerala based monthly publication was born in 2002.

Little Hands, a publication in English intended for school children, is the result of a group of educators who were appalled at the deterioration of English language seen in today’s generation. This monthly magazine includes a rich mixture of language practice, introduction to literature along with mathematics, science, art and craft to make the package attractive for children.

Sometimes in late 2002, several ideas of starting a regular children’s magazine started taking shape among a group of educators who were appalled at the deterioration of English language seen in today’s generation.
